It’s a new year and the new music is already rolling in thick and fast. Check out the latest from Viagra Boys, shame, L’Impératrice and Nubiyan Twist.

Viagra Boys – Welfare Jazz

The album we’ve been waiting for since before Christmas has finally arrived! The Swedish post-punk outfit’s cover of ‘In Spite of Ourselves’, a duet with Amyl and the Sniffers’ Amy Taylor, really whet our appetite for their second full length when we reviewed it at the end of 2020. The 40 minute release is packed full of delectable post-punk tracks, with the occasional tinge of country-ish sounds (the aforementioned cover for instance, is originally a song by legendary and beloved American country-folk singer-songwriter, John Prine). Scattered throughout the tracklisting are several 30 second skits, as well as a 5 minute instrumental track, making it a definite “sit down and listen to in full, no shuffle” affair for the full experience of the album. We can’t wait to hear these songs and more, live in Brighton and Newcastle in June.

L’Impératrice – Peur des filles

Literally translating to “fear of girls”, L’Impératrice have released another single from their upcoming album Tako Tsubo, a witty and playful song about femininity, accompanied by an equally delightful video that references pop culture pointers such as Mars Attacks. The track exudes their signature cool French flavour and coupled with previous single, Anomalie Bleue, promises to form part of another great full-length release in Spring, their first since 2018/19’s two language issues of Matahari.

Nubiyan Twist – If I Know

If the cold weather is getting you down this week, whack this one on. The latest single from Nubiyan Twist’s upcoming album, Freedom Fables, is a tremendously upbeat collaboration with Ghanaian purveyor of high-energy Afrobeat, K.O.G (Kweku Sackey). The tune is sure to get you moving and dreaming of those hot and balmy summer evenings.

shame – Nigel Hitter

Accompanied by the three singles released between September and December, and building to an imminent album release, Nigel Hitter is the latest track to be revealed from shame’s follow up to 2018’s critically acclaimed Songs of Praise. With the track serving as our fourth look at the soon-to-be-released Drunk Tank Pink, anticipation couldn’t be higher for the South Londoner’s latest full-length effort, which will be available next Friday (15th January), along with tickets for their tour later in the year.
