This week sees new albums from The Slow Readers Club and Baxter Dury, an EP from Document and brand new singles from Purity Ring.

Check out our run through of new releases below.

The Slow Readers Club – The Joy Of The Return

The Slow Readers Club are one of the most hotly tipped bands of 2020. For a band who have just released their fourth record, ‘hotly tipped’ might seem more reserved for a breakthrough artist – but The Slow Readers Club are one that have offered something more refreshing with each release.

The Joy Of The Return is a celebration of everything The Slow Readers Club are: vast swathes of synth soundscapes, ethereally melodic choruses and punching choruses. From the sharp opening of All I Hear via the racing instrumentation of Something Missing and mellowing warmth of Jericho, right through to the atmospheric conclusion in The Wait – The Slow Readers Club have given us a truly majestic release.

Baxter Dury – The Night Chancers (Brudenell)

Back with what DIY describe as “hypnotic loungecore,” Baxter Dury has dropped his sixth LP, The Night Chancers. Packed, as ever, with abstract lyricism, unique compositions and “a voice that’s become one of the most distinctive in contemporary British oddball-pop,” the Rough Trade signed artist commentates on social media across 10 tracks that clock in at just over half-an-hour long.

On Slumlord we hear glittery keyboard loops that have become so signature from Dury over the years and across the rest of the record – particularly on Sleep People we grow accustomed to genre bending soundscapes that fit somewhere between Leonard Cohen, The Streets and Talking Heads.

Document – A Camera Wanders All Night

Featuring acclaimed singles 'The Spy Who Came In from the Cold' and 'Pity', Manchester post-punk outfit Document has released their debut EP, A Camera Wanders All Night. The five release is, in their words “a culmination of a year's worth of work both on and off the stage.”

With an intense live performance now paired with an incredible set of recordings, Document have an action packed 2020 in store.

Purity Ring – peacefall + Pink Lightning

Ahead of the release of their highly anticipated new record, Womb, Purity Ring have released two brand new singles; Peacefell and Pink Lightning. Set to be released via 4AD, the Canadian duo’s cascading and glistening synths are paired elegantly with echoing vocals to tease two truly magical singles ahead of the record.

If – like ‘stardew’ - there singles are anything to go by, Womb is certain to go down as one of the best records of the year.

Passenger – The Way That I Love You

Passenger’s signature sound returns with the delicately plucky The Way That I Love You. One of the most consistently exciting artists of the past decade, Passenger questions “so how many times can I tell you you’re lovely just the way you are?” repeatedly and pleads that the recipient of the lovesong doesn’t let the world change them. Classic Passenger.
